Central Park, the crown jewel of Manhattan, is more than just a sprawling green space. This iconic park is a hidden treasure of history, nature, and unexpected surprises. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux and opened in 1858, becoming the first major landscaped public park in the United States. Most people don’t know there is a hidden cave in the park! It was sealed off in the 1930s due to safety concerns. The park is home to a statue of Balto, a famous sled dog who helped deliver medicine to combat a diphtheria outbreak in Alaska in 1925. There is an ancient Egyptian obelisk known as Cleopatra’s Needle in the park, which is over 3,000 years old and was given to the U.S. by Egypt in 1881. It is one of the most filmed locations in the world, it has a 55-acre Great Lawn, one of the oldest zoos in America, and over 20,000 trees.
From the gorgeous Bethesda Fountain to the tranquil Ramble, every corner of the park has a story to tell. You can explore the remnants of its rocky past, spot an array of wildlife, or simply relax and soak up the city's vibrant energy. With its rich history, diverse landscapes, and endless activities, Central Park continues to captivate visitors, proving that nature and urban life can coexist in perfect harmony.
